AeroPeek is a great feature, but it causes some unnecessary flashing of the windows when sliding from one preview to another, causing other windows to redraw and then be hidden again. Windows 7 doesn't do this on its taskbar.

OTOH, both Windows 7 and DF taskbar cause the windows on other monitors to be transparent outlines instead of just the monitor that contains the Window to be peeked. It would be neat if DF could optionally improve the Windows 7 taskbar and its own to only make transparent the windows on the same monitor as the target peeked window.

We've confirmed the issue with Aero Peek and it should be fixed for the next beta version. As for making it only hide the windows on the current monitor, we're unfortunately unable to do that because we're using the built-in Windows Aero Peek function.

Thanks!

I see how you fixed the flashing in Beta 5, but there is still some elegance to be had :)

1. In the DF preview window, sliding the cursor across the boundary between previews causes the select highlight box to flip to the next thumbnail. In the Win7 preview window, the highlight fades out and fades in simultaneously, highlighting the next thumbnail.

2. In the Win7 preview window, there is a slight deadzone outside the highlight, so as you travel left to right there is a delay before the next thumbnail is selected, and as you travel from right to left, there is a delay before the previous thumbnail is selected. This prevents quick flickering as you move back and forth between two thumbnails.

3. The highlight selection in the DF preview window has a black border that Win7 doesn't show.

4. The DF preview of the window is about 172x107 pixels on my screen, the Win7 preview about 201x123 pixels. This slight size difference appears to make a big difference in the appearance of window contents. In addition, the preview window itself is the same size so the Win7 previews have smaller borders around them.

5. I think I've talked about the shadow around the Win7 preview before.

6. The Win7 preview window has a secondary highlight that appears around a thumbnail if the corresponding window is the one that currently has focus. This is a translucent rectangle (without background gradient) that surrounds the thumbnail and stacks with the selection highlight when a thumbnail's window has focus and the thumbnail is being hovered above.

Functionally, I think the DF preview has reached amazing heights very, very quickly. This is definitely the multi-monitor taskbar to have.

Just a couple of quick follow-up questions regarding the window preview sizes, since mine are very close in size (only a few pixels off).

- Have you customized your preview sizes at all?
- Are you using higher font scaling/DPI settings?
- What application's preview sizes are inconsistent with the Windows taskbar? All applications, or only certain ones?

Thanks!

1. I have not intentionally customized preview sizes - I was not aware of how to do this? For the Windows taskbar, I have no custom registry settings for thumbnails.

2. I am using the normal 100% DPI settings.

3. I believe I did my first testing with Outlook 2010, but looking at Rumba 8.0 and full screen Explorer windows, it appears to be all applications. On Beta 7, it looks like the preview pane itself is also shorter for DF than for Windows 7 taskbar.

Strange! Are both your screens the same resolution? I'm using two 1920x1080 displays, and my preview windows look almost identical in size. See the attached screenshot.

Both monitors are 1920x1200. Here is a side by side comparison of the same full screen window - left side is DF taskbar preview, right side is Windows taskbar preview.

BTW, does the DF Taskbar preview use the Windows 7 registry settings for Preview size, etc?

DisplayFusion doesn't read the thumbnail registry settings yet, but we're planning on adding that in the later 3.4.0 Betas.

Can you check this registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Taskband and let me know if there are values like MaxThumbSizePx, etc... if they're there, can you list them?

Thanks!

I checked already and I have no custom settings in HKLM or HKCU for Taskband sizing.

Hi Guys - I just wanted to update this thread with an observation I hope is related. I use Taskbar Autohiding (win7x64 with ATI GPU), and the transition from hide to show is very smooth on DF Beta3 on all monitors. While using DF Beta8, the taskbar show/hide effect very "flickery" (however the "main", non-DF display is smooth). I have not tested with previous versions of the Betas and I can if it would be helpful to the troubleshooting process. Additionally, I am willing to provide any debug logs if helpful.

In the meantime, I am downgrading back down to Beta3 because I actually can't deal with the flickering.

Sorry to be a nitpicker. You guys are definitely rocking on ironing out all the kinks in this release, and it's much appreciated.

No worries!

It seems to be smooth for me in 3.4.0 Beta 8, but let's see if we can narrow down which version it broke in for you. The installers for 3.4.0 Beta 3 to 7 are attached. If you could start with Beta 3 to confirm that it's definitely ok, then update one by one and let me know what version it broke in, that would be fantastic.

Thanks!

OK - tested, and here are the results... rolling back to beta 3 in the meantime (as beta 4 caused explorer crashing).

beta 4 - smooth
beta 5 - flicker
beta 6 - flicker
beta 7 - flicker

Thanks for the prompt support!

Awesome, thanks for your help troubleshooting! We'll hopefully have a fix for one of the next few betas.

Just a quick follow-up on this. We've looked into it and unfortunately due to some other changes made to the taskbar, we won't be able to resolve the auto-hide animation issue yet. In the meantime, you can disable it by setting the "Taskbar: Auto-Hide Animation Disabled" advanced setting to 1. Auto-hide will still work, but it will show/hide without the scrolling animation.

I understand Keith, and I didn't expect (only hoped) for an immediate resolution. I'm simply bringing it to your attention and sincerely hoping you folks can resolve the issue. It would be most appreciated.

In the meantime, I'll update to beta8 and turn off the animation (even though it's really slick :)).

Look forward to a fix in the future!

FYI, while the sub-thread is resolved, the other issues are still there, especially the preview size issue.

Yep, there's a lot of stuff in this thread, so I'll make sure it's all added into our internal system and then I'll mark the thread as complete.

Thanks!

@NetMage: Quick question. If you uninstall DisplayFusion completely, and remove the %programfiles%\DisplayFusion folder, then reinstall, are the thumbnail preview sizes still incorrect? Just wondering if something is lingering from an old version. Make sure to reinstall with the latest beta from http://www.displayfusion.com/Download/Beta/.

Note that doing the above won't cause you to lose your settings since they're stored in the registry, but you can backup the settings using the button on the Options tab in the DisplayFusion settings just to be safe.

Thanks!

I uninstalled DisplayFusion Beta 9 completely - there was no %ProgramFiles%\DisplayFusion folder left.

I installed Beta 11, and still have the same thing - with the same 3 File Explorer windows DF taskbar shows significantly smaller previews than Win7 taskbar.

I also noticed Win7 taskbar surrounds previews with one pixel black (or very dark) border.

Attached is a picture - the left side is the Win7 taskbar, the right side is the DF taskbar.

Sorry for the slow response - trying 3.4.1 beta 7, and the preview sizes look very good to me.

Some of the other "elegance" issues (Delicious style anyone?) are still there, however. I assume they are priority issues.

Overall, much improved.

Thanks! And yep, we're constantly working on improving the appearance, but some times they become lower priority when there are critical bugs that need to be worked on.
