Since upgrading to 3.0.2, DF frequently locks up. This becomes obvious when the second taskbar stops responding and eventually becomes invisible. No errors are displayed when it happens.

To recover I have to end the DF task and start it again. It'll run for a while then stop again. I have not idea what the trigger is.

One thing unique about my system setup is that I use VirtualWin. This wasn't a problem with 3.0.1 and I haven't spotted a relationship between when DF stops and any VirtualWin events.

I own DisplayFusion Pro and I'm having the exact same problem, except that I don't use VirtualWin. I've tried both on home and work machines and I end up with frequent lock ups throughout the day. This has happened since I purchased a couple of weeks ago. At this point I can't really run the tool anymore - my system is just much more solid without it - which sucks, because I really want to run it (not to mention I just paid for it).

I don't use any special programs that I think would affect this (especially on both machines). I am running Windows XP in both cases, both with dual monitors and the second task bar enabled. The two apps I use the most and notice problems with are gTalk and Firefox.

Any help would be appreciated.

What happens when DisplayFusion locks up? Is it just the taskbar that locks or are you unable to right-click on the DisplayFusion system tray icon as well? Does the taskbar just stop updating, or is it completely locked and never redraws? Does this only happen when coming out of a screen saver, or standby or hibernation or anything like that? Or does the issue happen while you are actively using your computer?

I haven't used it in a few days because of the problems, so I'll start it up this morning and see if I can narrow it down. Specifically I do remember that the taskbar becomes completely unresponsive, and the tray icon is the same (I can't get its menu to come up). I eventually shut it down via task manager. I don't use screensavers, and I don't *think* it has to do with coming out of sleep (all I sleep is my monitors, these are both desktop PCs). I'll watch it today.

Thanks for helping to troubleshoot the issue. Things like this are often very hard to troubleshoot, as the problem only happens occasionally and I've never had it happen on my computer. :(

One other thing: What version of Windows are you using, and do you have Themes enabled?

I'm using Windows XP SP3. I'm using the "Zune Theme", which is basically a black version of the normal Blue theme. It's a standard Windows Theme, not Blinds or anything along those lines.

Excellent, I am using Windows XP SP3 and I have the Zune theme installed as well. I'll start using that theme day-to-day and see if I can reproduce the error.

If you are a fellow software developer, and familiar with some of the Microsoft debugging tools, I can provide some instructions on how to get the stacktrace from DisplayFusion next time it hangs. With the stacktrace I can nail down the cause without having to reproduce the error on my computer. Just let me know if you are interested. Thanks! :)

I haven't done any legitimate windows programming in nearly 10 years now - I spent that time moving into web programming. But I'd be happy to help however I can.

I'll post up the instructions and scripts tonight. I'll try to automate it as much as possible. :)

For clarity, I'm running XP SP3 with a custom visual style also. I also found that the system tray icon also stopped responding when the taskbar stopped.

I'm not a Windows developer, but can follow instructions if you want me to try getting a stracktrace also. Although, whilst DP had been locking up multiple times a day, it's managed to run the last day or more without a hitch.

Sorry for the delay. I've compiled a list of instructions on how to gather the required information. I've made it quite simple, and most of it is scripted. You can find the full details here:
http://www.binaryfortress.com/Forum/index.php?topic=826.0

If you find that DisplayFusion locks up again can you please follow these instructions and send me the resulting log files? Thanks!

I've emailed you a stacktrace. Let me know if you would like more. My trial had ended so I just purchased -- there won't be an issue with producing more :)

Thanks. You are the first person to submit a stack trace, and I can't thank you enough. I took a look at it last night, and just from glancing at it for 2 minutes I can already see the problem. If this turns out to be the solution, I never would have found it without the stack trace. :) For future reference, did you have any issues using the tools I provided to get the information? Was the process easy enough to follow?

I think it was pretty easy. Some people might like some clarification of which components are needed for the debugging tools--I think I just did a typical install but because I don't like to install what I don't need I wondered if I could do without some components.

Although when I first attempted to generate the files last week I didn't install the debugging tool until DF had already locked up, and running the bat file didn't generate any files. So I suspect you have to have the debugging tool already installed before DF has faulted.

I'm glad to hear that John. :) I've only received 1 stack trace, but that trace pointed at some code that I never would have guessed. I rolled in some changes and released a test build last night to a few people who are having this issue. Hopefully I can get this sorted out for the next version.

I love your app, but i have been experiencing this problem as well.
It starts with the second monitor taskbar becoming non responsive and then turning black.
I have to taskmanager kill the application and restart.

I am attaching the stack trace.

Display Fusion had crashed this way 4 times today already. I haven't been running the stacktrace on them, if you need more let me know and I can run it the next time it crashes.

I have sent PMs to everyone in this topic with instructions on how to get the new test version. Any feedback you can provide on this version is much appreciated. Thanks!

I would like to get the test patch as well, if possible. I am running DisplayFusion Pro v3.0.6 and the taskbar on my secondary monitor locks up multiple times per day.

Thank you in advance. Please let me know if you would like the stack trace.

In an effort to cleanup the DisplayFusion forum, this topic is being locked and archived because it applies to an older version of DisplayFusion. If you are using the latest version of DisplayFusion and would still like some assistance, please create a new topic and I'll be happy to help you out. Thanks! :)
