When using the Cheat Engine application on a multi-monitor setup with the latest version of DisplayFusion, the main window (and child windows) of Cheat Engine only shows its icon on the primary monitor's taskbar. Regardless of whether the window is manually dragged to another monitor or a hotkey is used to move it to another monitor, its icon will not show up on the taskbar of the monitor it was moved to.

To download Cheat Engine for testing, the following URL can be used:
https://www.cheatengine.org/download/CheatEngine7.2_MissingSetup.rar

This will download a RAR package which contains the CheatEngine.exe file and its companion files. I suggest using this package as opposed to the main download link on the download page (https://www.cheatengine.org/downloads.php) as it requires no installation (and the installer for the main download link contains promotional software "offers" which will be installed if not unchecked).

I've included a screenshot of my relevant DisplayFusion settings.

Hello,

Could you do the following to send me some more information about the application window that's having this issue?

  • Install one of our other apps, Window Inspector: https://www.binaryfortress.com/windowinspector (it's free)
  • Open the affected application
  • Open Window Inspector
  • Hover over the affected window with your mouse so that the affected window's info shows in the Window Inspector window
  • Press Ctrl + Shift + F1 to freeze the timer in Window Inspector
  • Press Ctrl + Shift + F2 to save the info from Window Inspector to a file
  • Send me the file from the previous step

Thanks!

Absolutely! I've included 3 files.

One with the window on my primary, center AOC monitor (labeled monitor #1 by Windows) which is an ultrawide running at 3440x1440.

One with the window on my left-side Dell monitor (labeled monitor #2 by Windows) which is a 1920x1200 monitor rotated into portrait orientation (so technically a 1200x1920 resolution).

Finally, the last file was taken with the window on my right-side Dell monitor (labeled monitor #3 by Windows) which is also a 1920x1200 monitor rotated into portrait orientation (so also technically a 1200x1920 resolution).

Let me know if you need anything else!

P.S. Just wanted to mention the one 'abnormal' thing I could think of in relation to this app and why it could possibly be acting differently than others. I'm pretty sure it is not relevant but in order for the app to work correctly with UWP/'Microsoft Store' apps (the app itself is used to view/analyze/modify any running app's process memory), special security permissions have to be added to the application's directory. Specifically, you must add a permission entry for the special/built-in user 'ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES' and give that user 'Read & Execute' permissions. I'm 99% sure this isn't the source of the problem as you do not modify the 'Owner' of the directory or change/modify any of the existing default permissions but I just thought I would mention it in case it was relevant. Thanks!

Hello,

Thanks for sending those over. That's an interesting note about the permissions. If you launch DisplayFusion as administrator, does the issue persist?

Does the application appear in your Alt+Tab menu as well?

Thanks!

Sorry I'm only just now getting back to you. Well, being that the DisplayFusion service is run with SYSTEM privileges, I don't think that should play any role. However, running the CheatEngine app with or without admin privileges makes no difference. No, unfortunately CheatEngine does not show up in the ALT+TAB menu either, regardless of whether its window is on my primary monitor or different one.

Wow, that is great news! I seriously think this is the 1st time a developer of commercial software has ever ACTUALLY followed through and fixed a bug in direct reply to a bug report I submitted... and as a result of being a developer myself (which I guess compels me to want to help identify and squash annoying bugs), I've submitted a LOT of very detailed bug reports over the years. I'm downloading the beta now and will give it a try. I'll report back here if I have any issues.
FYI, I've found another similar bug while using MobaXterm with DisplayFusion. While DisplayFusion is running, you cannot ALT+TAB to MobaXterm. You ALT+TAB to that window and nothing happens. Also, MRU tab order doesn't work with it.. it always appears at the very end of the ALT+TAB list of apps and instead of showing a screenshot of the app, as occurs with all other apps, it simply shows a generic app icon. Being as popular of an app as it is (at least for technical users, sys admins, etc), I'm actually surprised this hasn't been previously reported/fixed. Anyways, I didn't mean to ramble on so long about that.. I will open a new topic to report this issue properly. Thanks!

Hello,

We actually fixed up some issues with MobaXterm in this beta as well. Let me know if you still run into those issues after updating.

Thanks!

Hey Owen, looks like everything is resolved with Cheat Engine now. I tested things pretty thoroughly and everything seems to be working as it should. Thanks for remedying the issue!
It wasn't until after I posted my previous reply that I actually looked at the changelog of the latest beta and saw that there were some notes about fixes related to MobaXterm. Unfortunately, despite whatever changes were made in regards to MobaXterm, it still has some pretty significant issues. For one thing, it always shows up in the 2nd to last place (right before 'Desktop') in the ALT+TAB list. Additionally, it never shows a screenshot in the ALT+TAB list, instead just showing its application icon.
The 2nd issue is that its icon disappears from all taskbars whenever its window is moved to a non-primary monitor and then moved back to the primary monitor. In other words, its icon will show up on non-primary monitor taskbars but once the window is initially moved from the primary monitor (if that is the monitor it was when it started), it will never show up on that taskbar again (despite moving the window back to that monitor). The only way I've found to mitigate this is to add a compatibility rule in DisplayFusion instructing it to not remove that app's windows from the primary taskbar.
I'm not surprised that DisplayFusion has issues with this application as I've seen reports elsewhere about it using some type of strange custom built GUI frontend. It seems to do a lot of non-standard, strange things in regards to how it draws its GUI and how it manages its application windows. Please let me know if there is any other info I can provide. Thanks!
P.S. How the heck do you insert a blank line in between paragraphs in these posts? When posting, it always automatically deletes any consecutive line breaks past 1. I notice your replies have 2 consecutive line breaks...

Hello,

I'm not too sure if we can do anything about those Alt+Tab issues, let me check in on that.

I definitely can't reproduce that second issue you mentioned. Could you send me over a video of the issue happening?

I'm using "Enter" to create new line breaks :)

Thanks!

We've made some adjustments to the way MobaXTerm appears in our Alt+Tab Windows. Please let me know if the issue persists after updating to our latest beta.

Thanks!

Did this bug re-appear? I'm currently on 10.1.1 steam version and experience the same issue as described.

Cheat Engine. It always shows on the main monitor taskbar, regardless of which monitor the window is on. Even when selecting the option of "all taskbars show all open windows" display fusion taskbar still doesn't show Cheat Engine, while main taskbar does.

Ya, unfortunately it appears that Cheat Engine is having the same issues that it was before. Not a huge deal but it would certainly be great if it could be fixed.
