Jon,

Sorry, I got busy and I am just now getting around to getting that debug log you asked for in the following archived/locked thread:
http://www.binaryfortress.com/Forum/index.php?topic=1613.msg7617#msg7617

I have uploaded my log to the following url:
http://www.cgriffin.net/files/DisplayFusion_20100701.log

I copied the DisplayFusion.log file to DisplayFusion_20100701.log immediately after the glitch occured.

If I would double-click on a taskbar icon on the Windows taskbar in the primary monitor then half the time it would dissappear and the reappear as the last taskbar icon on the primary Windows taskbar. It would happen in a blink of an eye (you could see it blink out and reappear. it did not take long to reappear).

This never happens on the DisplayFusion taskbar on the secondary monitor.

After this occured, I exited out of DisplayFusion so that it was no longer running and then I went on a double-clicking frenzy on all the taskbar icons on the Windows taskbar and none of them would move or relocate.

Earlier this month I attempted to install several taskbar button programs such as XNeat and Taskbar Shuffle to see if they would lock the buttons in their places unless specifically moved, but the problem persisted with them installed. At the time of the DisplayFusion.log I have linked above during this test today, no other taskbar-related programs were running. It was a plain, stock Windows taskbar.

In addition, here is the information from my Troubleshooting Tab:

Let me know if you need anything else from me.

The problem is intermittent enough that it makes using programs on my primary display a pain.

Let me just make sure I understand the issue correctly, so I can try to replicate it here:
Double-clicking a taskbar button on the Windows taskbar causes the taskbar item to disappear, correct?

Does this taskbar item appear (even briefly) on a DisplayFusion taskbar?
Does the issue ever happen with a single-click?

On a side note, for future reference, you can just upload the logs attached to your forum posts using the "Attach" box below when responding. Thanks!

Also, can you update to the new 3.1.9.1 version in the meantime? It will provide some better logging, and better taskbar stability. Thanks!

I just updated to 3.1.9.1 and I will enable debug logging and see if the problem still persists.

It has happened to me when I single-clicked in the past, but I seem to be able to reproduce the issue more consistently when I double-click. I will not double-click the buttons when logging it this next time so that the problem occurs and is logged with a single click.

I don't think the button flashed on the DF taskbar on the secondary monitor in-between dissappearing on Windows taskbar and re-appearing on Windows taskbar at the rightmost position. I will try to pay closer attention to the DF taskbar when it happens again. It happens in the blink of an eye so it could be bouncing back and forth between the taskbars more quickly than my eyes can discern.

Without exception, every time the taskbar button dissappears on the Windows taskbar it re-appears as the rightmost button on the Windows taskbar (shifts every existing button one space to the left to fill in the gap where the old position of the button was and the button is appended as the last button when it re-appears.

Do you need me to re-attach the debug log I linked above to a forum post in this thread? or just do the next log using your preferred method?

It just occurred with a single click on the first taskbar button on the Windows taskbar. I have attached the log.

I don't know if this is relevant, but I have several taskbar buttons with the same button caption. I use SecureCRT rather heavily and at many times have several SSH sessions open to the same remote server. So, for instance, I may have 3 or 4 taskbar buttons on the Windows taskbar with the caption of "server.domain.com - SecureCRT". I thought I would mention that, in case it could be contributing to the issue. Although, I believe the same thing has happened to me while using separate windows of Firefox pointed at different URLs (and therefore different button captions).

I am willing to do anything you need for me to help you troubleshoot the issue.

Which taskbar item re-shuffled in the log? Was it the "Van Dyke Technologies - SecureCRT" application?

Yes, it was that application.

I re-activated debug logging and luckily it happened again shortly after activating the log.

This time the application was Pidgin IM client. I looked at the log and it is shown as "Buddy List". Pidgin uses GDK so any mention of gdk in the log is likely Pidgin-related.

I have attached the new log to this post.

I never thought I'd see the day, but the issue is cooperating with me today. That is, it is actually showcasing itself for the debug log. Usually I have troubles triggering the issue on command.

I have recorded a third log just now where a Firefox taskbar icon was shuffled to the end. It's caption is "www.griffin.lan / localhost / ..." in the log.

I have attached the log to this comment.

Can you extract the attached files into your DisplayFusion installation folder? It should overwrite 2 files. Then make sure logging is enabled and let's hope the error happens again. This build has improved logging, which should help me figure out what is going on. I can say it is 100% DisplayFusion's fault, I can see it removing, then adding the Taskbar item back again right away. Thanks!

I copied those files so I am now running v3.1.9.105 (beta 5)

The error occurred shortly after starting the new version. I have attached the log.

The window in question this time is "RHealth Mail - Inbox (63) - ..." Firefox window.

I will run another test and let it run for a bit longer and see if I can get multiple issues logged in one instance.

The last log I attached (04_beta.log) might have been due to me not clicking on all the taskbar buttons since DF was fired back up. I clicked on all the taskbar icons on the Windows taskbar and they all shuffled on the initial clicks after DF started. However, after I clicked on all of them at least once then they locked in place for quite some time. It took me awhile to trigger it this time, but it finally happened again (it moved the Firefox "RHealth ..." window to the end).

I tried to pay attention to all the minute details. Every time I click on a taskbar button on the DF taskbar I see the icon flash on the main Windows toolbar (it flashes so quickly that I do not see the full taskbar button, but just briefly the icon of the application). For instance, if I clicked on a Firefox button on the DF taskbar then I'd briefly see the Firefox logo after the last button on the main Windows toolbar.

I also ran a test using Firefox. I had 4 Firefox windows running: 2 on the main Windows taskbar and 2 on the DF taskbar. If I would click back and forth between the 2 Firefox buttons on the DF taskbar enough times then I could sometimes click on a Firefox button on the main taskbar afterwards and it would flicker the Firefox logo after the last button on the main Windows taskbar as well as highlight the first Firefox button on the DF taskbar. It wasn't shuffling or bringing up the wrong windows, but I noticed that taskbar behavior. Usually the icons only flickered when I clicked on DF taskbar icons and not the Windows taskbar icons. However, as I outlined above, I could sometimes trigger the flickering when clicking on a button on the main Windows taskbar.

For the sake of the test, here are the captions of those windows:
Windows Taskbar Firefox #1 - "www.griffin.lan / ..."
Windows Taskbar Firefox #2 - "RHealth Mail - Inbox ..."

DisplayFusion Taskbar Firefox #1 - "Administration - AccessMD ..."
DisplayFusion Taskbar Firefox #2 - "Slashdot ..."

The DisplayFusion taskbar itself never messes up and the windows are always in the order than I arrange them (no shuffling).

As usual, I attached the debug log of the latest Firefox shuffle.

Ok, here's another build that should fix the issue, hopefully. :) It's very hard for me to debug, as I can't replicate the issue here. :( Thanks for testing all of these builds!

No no, thank you for taking the time and effort to work on resolving my issue.

I have the new files in place and I have my fingers crossed ... or is that bad luck?

Do you have your windows taskbar on your primary monitor, or your second monitor?

My Windows taskbar is on my secondary display and DF is running on my primary display.

My monitor setup is: [ 1 ] [ 2 ]

where [ 1 ] is my secondary display
and [ 2 ] is my primary display

I do it this way for gaming purposes. I don't know if it is because I am left-handed, but it is easier for me to work and play on the right monitor (the angle I sit, etc.). Also, by having the Windows taskbar on the secondary display it provides me easy access to my Start Menu and desktop icons while in a full-screen application on the primary display. Otherwise the full-screen application would be overlaying it all.

I think I've figured out the problem, it has to do with the fact that your Windows Taskbar is on a secondary monitor in Windows XP. Can you give this attached build a try? If it doesn't work, can you post the information from the Troubleshooting tab here again as well? Thanks!

Awesome. I'll try the new build out and let you know either way. Thanks!

I think you fixed it. I have been putting it through the ringer since yesterday and it has yet to erroneously shuffle on me.

I will let you know if it ever messes up on me again (hope not), but for now I think you can mark this in your win column.

It is still working perfectly since that last beta build you had me try.

I noticed tonight that 3.1.10 is now available. Is the fix included in that version? Is it safe for me to upgrade to that version? I only ask because I didn't see it mentioned in the changelog.

Sorry, I forgot to include that in the change log. Yes, the new 3.1.10 release includes all the fixes from the betas, including this one. Go ahead and update to the public release, it should work perfectly. :)
