I have been a long time user of DisplayFusion, currently on a proven to be very stable (1.5 years old) AMD 5900 / 32GB / 2x 4TB Gen4 SSD / nVidia 2070 Super / 3x UHD setup running Windows 10 (now fully up to date) and Bitdefender as antivirus.

Due to an issue with incredible GUI lag after running my pc for about 5 days, verified 100% attributable to DF running high CPU (high res imagery as wallpaper, 2/3 monitors split in half for documents reading), I needed to reboot again, with pending windows updates (which I usually apply no later than one to two weeks after they have come available). Very annoying, as I work from home and have to re-open everything again afterwards. Apparently a know issue, which I have been dealing with for over a year now (please fix this!!).

Now however DF did not start, nor did any of the executables show up in task manager. Eventually I even tried uninstalling the current version, with and eventually also without retaining current settings. This pains me a lot since it took me a long time to perfect settings; as I could not get back into the program, everything was lost. Sometimes parts of one background would show up after hovering over icons, being lost again after another reboot.

However, having followed various threads, also trying the beta and various previous versions up until 9.8 did not work. Leaving task manager open shows the executable for a brief moment, only to disappear again directly without any error message. Same with starting directly from command line. Also checked the system tray, there is no icon as was before.

I am at a loss, as my productivity is now being severely limited by this issue.

Kindly assist ASAP.

It sounds like something with the .NET Framework broke on your system with the Windows Updates. If the process shows up and then immediately disappears without any error messages, it indicates an crash in the .NET bootstrap process, before it's even getting to our actual code.

Could you try uninstalling the Microsoft .NET Runtime 7.0.0 (Windows Settings > Apps > Installed Apps) and then re-download and install it from the link below?

Thank you, that did it for me.

However one issue remains: DF 10 beta4 is still horrendously slow e.g. when navigating though settings. I downgraded to 10.0 stable, which made significant difference, allbeit still slow (e.g. up to 40% CPU usage during screen saver display on all three monitors, crossfading flickering instead of smooth), which on aforementioned system is a LOT.

Is there anything that can be done about that? Downgrading is not an option since this problem was also occuring in the 9.x versions (more or less as slow as the current beta).

That's strange for sure, especially since the issue spans multiple versions. Could you send me a debug log?

  • On the DisplayFusion Settings > Troubleshooting tab, change the Logging drop-down to "L1: Log Minimal" and click Apply
  • Reproduce the issue and note the time so we'll know where to check in the log file
  • Click the "Export Info to File" button on the Settings > Troubleshooting tab
  • Reply with the file attached
  • Disable debug logging after sending the log

Thanks!
