I'm running into an issue running VirtualBox on Windows 8.1 with dual monitors. The VM I'm running is Windows 7 and it's configured to use both monitors as well.

If DisplayFusion is running when I first boot the VM, the secondary monitor is detected by the VM; however, I can never display it. The steps to reproduce are as follows:

- Left-hand monitor is primary, right-hand monitor is secondary
- Spin up Virtualbox Windows 7 VM on right-hand monitor configured for dual monitors (boot from scratch, not restore)
- Windows 7 should be configured identically, i.e. right-hand monitor is primary, left-hand is secondary

Windows 7 will detect and use the left-hand monitor, but the taskbar will never show the "icon" for the left-hand window, nor is it accessible from the Windows 8.1 host.

If, however, DisplayFusion isn't running when the Win 7 VM is booted, all will work fine. Additionally, if once both monitors are working in the VM, if the session is "saved" rather than shut down, it will continue to work fine.

VirtualBox version: 4.3.12 r93733 (also happened on earlier versions)
Display driver: AMD Radeon HD 7800 v13.251.0.0
Intel Core i7 processor 3.2GHz, 18GB RAM
Dual 1920x1200 monitors
DisplayFusion Pro on Steam v6.1 (also happened on earlier versions)

I'll test this out here and see what we can do to get this fixed up :)

I've just tested this out here, and it seems to work fine for me. Perhaps the second VirtualBox window is just opening off the screen? If you use Alt+Tab, does the second VirtualBox window show up there?

Naturally, every time I've done it in the past, I've had the issue. Even just before posting this. Now I can't reproduce it.

Let me pay closer attention to what exactly I'm doing before-hand.

Thanks,

Brett

Okay, I think I have it.

1. Boot machine as described so you have two windows up - start menu for VM on right-hand display.
2. Minimize left-hand VM display so that you're seeing the host machine left-hand display (rather than the VM left-hand display)
3. Reboot VM

When the VM goes to initialize the secondary (left-hand) display that's minimized as it's booting, the icon will disappear. From that point on, it won't come back unless you close DisplayFusion and reboot the VM.

Let me know if that works for you. I'm able to reproduce it reliably now. I operate in that fashion so often (with the right-hand display running my VM and the left-hand running my local), I didn't realize what I was doing. I only use the left-hand side of the VM about 50% of the time.

Ok, interesting! I'll test it out here tomorrow with those steps :)

Ok, just tested out these steps, but still can't reproduce the issue. For me, the taskbar button for the second monitor stayed on the DF taskbar. Which taskbar mode are you using? (Settings > Taskbar tab)

I've attached a screenshot of the taskbar settings page. BTW, I am running the VirtualBox Guest Additions in my Windows 7 VM.

Ok, that's how I tested here too. I'm running VirtualBox 4.3.16, could you try updating to that version to see if you can still reproduce this?

Hmm... I upgraded to 4.3.16 r95972. Spun up the new version of VirtualBox, then upgraded the VM additions for my Windows 7 VM as well. Minimized the left screen, rebooted to pick up the new drivers and the left screen disappeared again.

I did check the logs. The following seems to be the relevant portion (the secondary screen disappears when the "glowing windows logo" goes away once the boot is finished). I've highlighted the events that seem tied to the screen disappearing. Note that Windows doesknow about the second screen--it shows up in the Display Resolution control panel applet. I simply can't see it, nor does it show up in the Alt-Tab window list.

One other piece of interesting information--if I exit DisplayFusion, only one of the icons show up at the bottom of the screen. It's not until I reboot the VM (with DisplayFusion shut down) that the second window will come back.

One interesting tidbit (and correction to the above). The only way I could get the second (left-hand) window to come back was to "power off and on" the VM. Just rebooting wasn't sufficient.

Ok, could you attach a DisplayFusion debug log? Here are the steps:
  • On the Troubleshooting tab, change the Logging drop-down to "Logging: Important Only"
  • Restart DisplayFusion
  • Reproduce the issue, note the time so we'll know where to check in the log file
  • Send us the DisplayFusion.log and DebugInfo.html files (can be found by clicking the Open Log button on the Troubleshooting tab)
  • Disable debug logging after sending the log

Thanks!

Okay. Issue reproduced. Happened right at 17:23.

Thanks,

Thanks! It seems like it might not be updating the taskbar because it's detecting VirtualBox as full screen. Could you try enabling the "Allow taskbar reloading while a full screen application is running" option on the Settings > Taskbar tab to see if that helps?

Sorry it took so long to get back to you on this. Schedules at work changed and I haven't gotten a chance to test. Sadly, this didn't work. Here's what I did:

- went into DisplayFusion settings > Taskbar and checked "Allow taskbar reloading while full screen applications are running."
- I hit Apply, then hit OK
- I spun up VirtualBox, booted my VM and logged in (both screens showed)
- I minimized the left-hand screen and rebooted my VM
- The left-hand screen was not available, nor was the icon in the taskbar once the VM came back up. The Screen Resolution control panel applet did, however, show two screens.
- I checked DisplayFusion settings - taskbar reloading was still checked
- On a whim, I tried "Reset All Taskbars"--all of the icons showed up in the left-hand taskbar, then went away. Still no love.

Note on the last step, I think I only saw ONE VirtualBox VM icon instead of the expected two.

Ok, the one thing I forgot to mention, is that even if I exit DisplayFusion completely, when the VM reboots with the second monitor window minimized, that second monitor window is completely blank, requiring me to set it to a single monitor, apply the settings, and set it to dual monitors again to get it back. Do you run into that as well if you exit DisplayFusion?

Interesting. I started to respond that I hadn't seen the behavior you were describing, so I went to reproduce what you described and actually got the same results. The difference is that I was "resetting" the machine at the logon page rather than actually logging in and doing a "Start... Reboot."

I just followed the following steps:

1. Boot machine with df running
2. Minimized left-hand screen
3. At logon screen, reset the machine
4. Once the machine came back up - left-hand screen was missing.
5. Exited df and reset machine again
6. Machine came back up - no left-hand screen
7. Logged in - STILL no left-hand screen
8. I then shut down cleanly from the start menu (not rebooted)
9. I started the machine from the VirtualBox Manager and it came up with two monitors.

There seems to be something different that happens when you reset, when you restart from the start menu, or you boot fresh from the Virtualbox Manager.

Perhaps that adds some insight?

Ok, interesting! When you say you reset it at the logon screen, do you mean that you're using Machine > Reset in the main window for that VM?

Yes. Sorry I was unclear, I should have been more specific.

Normally, I don't just "reset" my machine because I use it for work. Typically I shut it down from the start menu.

Ok, I'm totally stumped as to why I can't reproduce this issue here. I'll have another go at it next week and see what I can figure out :)

Weird.

Okay, so more about my configuration:

Dell XPS9100:
- Intel Core i7 960 processor - 1 CPU - 3.2GHz, 4 cores, Hyperthreading enabled
- 18GB RAM
- Windows 8.1 Pro, 64-bit

Video card:
- AMD Radeon HD 7800 series
- Drivers: 12/6/2013, v13.251.0.0
- Both monitors running at 1920 x 1200, primary on left

Running Windows Update, I was fully patched at the beginning of September. It looks as though I have a couple of optional updates. One is actually from AMD for my graphics card.

Can't think of anything else that would really be relevant.

Sorry about the way late response on this. I haven't forgotten about this, but I'm totally stumped on what could be happening there. I'm about to test this again to see what I can come up with, but in the meantime, could you try updating to the latest 7.2 Beta and let me know if you still run into this issue?

Keith-

I have some good news for you: I actually encountered this problem once while displayfusion was not running. It appears you're off the hook for the issue. Since then I've upgraded my machine and haven't even encountered the issue, so it might have been a problem with VirtualBox.

Thanks!

Ah ok, glad to hear it's all good now! (and that it wasn't a DisplayFusion bug :))

Please let me know if I can help with anything else!
