The long overdue, much stressed-over Beta 14 is finally here. It brings with it some significant changes, most of which are in the installer. Here's a quick rundown on the changes:

- Re-arranged some controls on the Wallpaper screen to look less cluttered
- Got rid of the Settings window cancel confirmation
- Handles grouped taskbar buttons MUCH better now
- Fixed the horrible colours on the Wallpaper screen
- Fixed the monitor names in the wallpaper dialog
- Made the wallpaper form show sooner after double-clicking the tray icon (now loads the images after the form shows, not before)
- Added some better exception reporting when errors occur
- Localized the last few strings
- Fixed some system tray menu width issues with longer text string
- Added an "open log location" button
- All new installer
- Experimental Windows 7 support

If anyone runs into ANY installation issues or hiccups please let me know.

This build is by far the most stable yet, and has been running on my XP, Vista x64 and Windows 7 machines for a couple of days now without issue. I would advise everyone to upgrade as soon as they can.

This forum is now the preferred place for posting feedback/comments/questions about the betas.

If you aren't prompted to upgrade automatically, you can download it here:
http://www.binaryfortress.com/Data/Download/?package=displayfusion&beta=1

If there aren't any show-stopping bugs, this could be the final version. There are still a few translations to finish up, but I'm more confident in the release quality of this build than any before it.

Thanks everyone, and happy testing!

Hi Jon, thanks for another fine update!

2 little things bother me to be honest, first could you implement the feature to not create a start menu folder in the installer again? Thanks :)

2nd, when I upgraded to Beta 14, the previous version was uninstalled, no biggy, but I also lost all my custom hotkeys? Since I use a lot of them, this was kind of annoying, is there any way to store these hotkeys in the registry or somesort, so when you uninstall an older version these settings are kept?

@Peter: I will add the start menu option into the installer for Beta 15. Are you using Windows Vista by any chance? If you are, I may know what caused it, but if not we can troubleshoot the issue further.

Beta 14 looks great so far. Not seeing any "Error @ GetButton: No333" errors yet and no taskbar button freezing yet (crosses fingers). I'll load this up on Windows 7 tonight as well.

Great work, Jon!

I've got my fingers crossed as well. I did a lot of work on threading, button polling and error logging between Beta 13 and Beta 14. If something does go wrong, can you post your debug.log file and the information from the troubleshooting tab?

Thanks!

Thanks! Awesome, and yeah I'm running Vista Home Premium :) (32-bit, if that makes any difference?)

This is an issue I ran into while working with the new installer... I hope this doesn't get to complicated to explain. When an installer is launched in Windows Vista it asks for administrator access - which means it is now running in the context of an administrator NOT in the context of your user. This is fine for the installation. The problem arises after the installation. If the installer then runs the program that it just installed, that program will be run in the context of the administrator, not your user. That means that any settings you create in the registry are not for your user, they are for the administrator. The next time you restart your computer and run the application again it will be started as a normal user and your settings that you configured while running in the context of an administrator will not be there. I'm guessing this might be what happened to you after installing an older beta. The new installer won't let you run DisplayFusion after an installation when using Windows Vista or Windows 7. I still have to test much of this, it's only a theory right now, but I've been told that this is the way Vista works. Hopefully that didn't ramble on too much - does this make any sense?

Argh, just came back from a restroom break and XP screen saver was on. Wiggled the mouse to unload the screensaver and part of DF task bar has gone black. and buttons still show when window closed. (seems like some kind of refresh issue). Going to settings and hitting OK (which reloads the taskbar) goofs it up even more. I have image captures if anyone can explain how to attach an image here... :-P

You can attach the images when you reply under "Additional options". You can attach up to 4 files, up to 1mb each.

I presume 14:31 is when you unlogged your computer? Do you know what the window with no title might be? The one that is removed and re-added 5-6 times?

Ok, here goes:
First capture is right after screensaver. Second one is when I ran settings and DF refreshed.

The only other programs I've got in the taskbar are two excel sheets. Here's more info from the Log around the time of the freeze:

If the taskbar is still messed up, can you post your troubleshooting information from the settings window? (not from the debug.log) If you don't want to post all of it you can just post the "managed threads" section? (it's at the bottom)

I think the screensaver is causing those "windows taskbar add/remove" messages with no window text, and i think the "x86 GetButton hResult" errors are caused when the screensaver exits. I'm going to try and put together a special build for you tonight and we'll get to the bottom of this.

Hi Jon, thank you for the reply and I understood perfectly. Indeed when a program is run as an administrator it'll use other settings than when the program is run as an user. Becuase programs run as an user are ran in their own "virtual store", but this only happens when UAC is turned on. UAC is turned on over here, but if I run displayfusion.exe as an administrator or just as an user, my custom key settings are gone. Even tried to reboot. It's OK now, since I reconfigured them but would you happen to know of anything else I can try to help understand this problem?

Jon,
Here's the simularites between my work machine and home:
Standard XP screen saver
Run WinAmp and FireFox from USB (I don't usually have WinAmp running at home tho...)
Notepad++ running (locally) on both machnes
Microsoft ZUNE theme on both machines
McAfee virus scanner on both machines.
Kana Launcher menu on both machines.

ok, this morning I changed themes to xp standard and shut off Kana Launcher, went to screensaver mode a couple of times and got this:

@benway: I have 2 requests for you. When you're posting more information can you create a new post instead of editing existing ones? I'm finding it a bit tricky to keep up with the edits. :) Now, down to troubleshooting business. First, can you uninstall DisplayFusion, reboot then make sure the "C:\Program Files\DisplayFusion" is completely gone? Next re-install the newest DF beta from here:
http://www.binaryfortress.com/Data/Download/?package=displayfusion&beta=1

After installation check the troubleshooting information in the Settings window and make sure that both hook DLLs are version "1.0.0.0".

Let that run for a while and we'll see what happens. If it still freezes, would you be able to start disabling software one-by-one? Does this issue happen every time when the screen saver kicks in? If so, it should be fairly easy to figure out which piece of software is conflicting. For example, start by exiting Kana Launcher. If the problem persists try disabling Mcafee... etc.

Thanks!
