In windows on a landscape monitor, you can just do winkey+left to make the window take up half the horizontal space of the screen.
Is there a way to do this on a portrait screen. So stack 2 applications on top of each other, each taking half the space available vertically?

Yep! Ctrl + Win + Up and Ctrl + Win + Down. Alternatively, you can split it into two halves in DF Monitor Configuration > Splits and Padding. Then you can just move a window into either half and maximize it :)
