There are many different types of transition that could be implemented. Imagine your wallpapers sliding, or zooming, or curling, or pixellating, or rotating, etc. etc. Please. Please. Please.
This is currently on our feature request list, so I've added your vote. We'll be sure to let you know if/when we're able to implement it.
