Hello,

I am trying to get my head around all the options DF offers to see if it is possible to 'fix' a monitor configuration even if one is switched off.

I have a three display setup on my main PC, but want to use one monitor with a KVM switch to extend and control my laptop when required.

Problem is that the default windows behaviour on the main PC is to re-arrange all open windows onto the remaining displays when windows detects one being switched off (or switched to the laptop in my case, but the end result is the same).

Can I use DF to trick windows into believing the 3rd monitor is still attached so stuff just keeps running as I intended it?

Apologies if this has been asked before. I tried searching on this forum but since I am not sure what search term to use I failed to find any relevant discussions.

Thanks in advance and regards

There isn't a way to fake the third monitor, no. However, on the Settings > Functions tab, you can set key combinations on the "Save Window Positions" and "Restore Window Positions From Last Save" functions. You can save them before you switch, and then restore them after switching back.

Hope that helps!

Keith,

Since posting the question I have found out it can be done in hardware with an EDID emulator (a small adaptor that tricks the PC into believing the monitor remains attached). Mine arrived today and it works like a dream.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Regards

Gerard

Can you explain this in further detail? I'm having an issue with my display port monitor going to sleep and moving everything around.

It's a small hardware device which plugs into your pc/laptop. You then plug your monitor cable into the device. If that connection gets disturbed for any reason (monitor goes to sleep or is disconnected) the device continues to generate the EDID (Extended Display Identification Data) signal to the PC and the PC never realises the monitor is no longer there, hence has no reason to mess up your desktop layout.

The one I have works on HDMI and I am not sure if DP versions exist, but if you search for "EDID emulator" on the usual e-commerce sites you'll find soon enough. Expect to pay around 20-25$ or so.

Unfortunately have not been able to find one that suits my needs. I've found one that passes through DP, but it doesn't support the resolution/refresh rates which I can't compromise with because it's my primary monitor.
