I've used DisplayFusion on this computer (Core 2 Quad 2.4GHz, 8GB RAM, W7Ultimate x64) for a number of months, and installed 3.4.1 as soon as it was available. Only in the last few days however, I've seen massive CPU usage and spikes when I open new tabs in browsers (IE/Firefox/Chrome) or open new apps.

Upgraded to beta 3.5.0 (beta 1) and saw the same behavior. Uninstalled DisplayFusion including all settings, restarted. Installed fresh 3.4.1 and that worked well for a few hours but now I'm back to the same behavior. After the apps or tabs are opened things settle down but while it's happening my system fans ramp up as if I'm running some massive game.

I also run this on my laptop, Core i5, 8GB RAM and have never seen this behavior. Yet.

I've got a Process Explorer screenshot of what happens when opening a few apps, one after another. I also did a Troubleshooting analysis during one of these spikes and will email that to support@binaryfortress.com.

Same here. I have been experiencing the high cpu usage for a while, with using 3.5.0 b1 and 3.4 version. The reason I upgraded to beta was to see if there has been any improvement. But same problem continues. I see 15-20 (or 10-15) cpu peaks, and at those moments, file browsing and other applications response goes down substantially, forcing me to end the displayfusion process.
As soon as I end displayfusion, all other operations are back to normal.

Any experience or workaround?

Thanks

A workaround is to set the Priority of DisplayFusion.exe to Below Normal (I use Process Explorer for this) so that although it continues to demand high CPU it doesn't drag down everything else you're trying to do. I also went in and set the Affinity of the app to not use a couple of my processors. I'm certain there are scriptable ways to do this every time you start up but I don't want to spend the effort to figure that out, as I'm sure a fix will be provided.

Thanks for the suggestions Lowell. Just a quick question though. I thought the cpu priority is only functional, if there are other applications competing for the cpu amount. In my case, laptop is mostly idle, and DF keeps 15-20. So, do you think priority would help? I believe, it will keep using the same amount since there is no competing application, most of the time.

Also, I havent tried cpu affinity; I will definitely give a try.

You're correct; in my case it's taking about 10-20% on a regular basis, but when an app opens (or even closes, looks like, but especially opening) it'll pin to 80-100% for 4-5 seconds, and that keeps going if I open another app or tab. So in that case it will definitely help performance of other apps. Affinity just make sure that it leaves at least a couple CPUs alone so other apps can use them, again for increased apparent performance of everything else.

Hi guys,

We are continuing to work on the high CPU issues, and we're also going to be adding some new metrics and extra information to the debug logging for the next beta. I'll be sure to let you know as soon as it's available to try out.

Also note, you can set the process Priority and Affinity in the DisplayFusion Advanced Settings, that way it will take affect every time DisplayFusion is started :)

Hopefully that will at least make it usable until we can find a permanent fix for the issue.

Thanks!

DisplayFusion 3.5 Beta 2 is now available for download here: http://www.displayfusion.com/Download/Beta/

It will hopefully resolve any performance or stability issues, but if not, please do the following to help us troubleshoot it further:
  • On the Troubleshooting tab, change the Logging drop-down to "Logging: All Lines"
  • In the Advanced Settings, enable the "General: Advanced Debug Logging" option (note that if you already had the options in steps #1 and #2 enabled, please disable them to see if the performance issues still exist. If they do, turn them back on and proceed to step #3)
  • During, or after the issue occurs, send me the info from the Troubleshooting tab, as well as the DisplayFusion.log file (can be found by clicking the Open Log button on the Troubleshooting tab)
  • You can turn off the options from steps #1 and #2 after sending the info in step #3.

Thanks!

Will do. I installed the beta and am still seeing the high CPU issues but will follow your steps first and send you the logging info.

Thanks Lowell! After you've sent over the logging info (you can email it to me at support@displayfusion.com if you prefer not to post it here), could you try disabling the TitleBar Buttons feature to see if that makes any difference?

I am having the same issue. I have the logging set as requested and when I see the issue again I will send the logs over if it will help you. It seems to ramp up slowly. I just restarted DF after changing the logging and right now it is averaging ~10% CPU.

Thank you,

Marco

So far disabling the TitleBar Buttons feature makes the high CPU usage issue go away.

Ok, we've just released DisplayFusion 3.4 Beta 4. Could you give it a try and let me know how it goes?

Thanks!

Keith, Still seeing really high CPU usage with Beta 5. But I also rolled back to 3.4.0 which I thought was running normal and it seems that the CPU is running high on that version too.

I feel there may be something else. When I turn off the Title Bar buttons, and Taskbar it drops to 0-3%.

Keith,

It has been awhile since I rebooted my machine (I usually just close my laptop and go). I think I am pushing close to a month or more so I just restarted with the new Beta installed. I'll give it some time and see how it goes and keep digging around as time permits.

Sounds good. If you still run into performance issues, could you disable the Application Hooks in the DisplayFusion Advanced Settings and restart DisplayFusion to see if that makes any difference at all?

Thanks!

Keith,

I have the Application Hooks disabled. CPU is still running at 35-50%. I also still have the CPU Affinity to Single and the Process running at low priority.

Hi folks. None of the beta versions helped me either. I found only way not using DF for a while (even though I am missing DF a lot, I really need it). Hopefully we will get a solution.

Thanks and have a nice weekend!

Ok, we've got another idea on what might be causing it, so we're going to make some changes for Beta 5. I'll post an update as soon as it's available to try out.

Thanks!

DisplayFusion 3.5 Beta 5 is now available.

If you still have high CPU usage with this version, could you let me know if it is constantly running high, or if it creeps up after time?

Please also let me know if you have WindowBlinds or Bins running on your system as well.

Thanks!

So far using the latest beta (5) and seeing no issues. I re-enabled the task button to swap windows, restarted computer, still no issues. I had Bins installed at one point but uninstalling it hadn't made a difference.
