This large, ever-increasing number of these instances has been happening intermittently for several weeks now. I leave my PC on 24/7 and the longer it runs, the more instances accumulate, *sometimes*. Other times, I might have one instance show up, usually momentarily, then close. I'm guessing it might be a particular app that is invoking this "help" when it is running, but I don't which one, nor how to stop it. To my knowledge I've been running the same apps for months and months and this problem seems to have started in the version 9.9+ and onward releases. Any ideas?

Yikes! That process shouldn't even be running on non-Windows 8 systems.

Could you check the following?

  • Open File Explorer and navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\DisplayFusion.
  • Right-click DisplayFusion.exe and click Properties.
  • On the Compatibility tab, is anything enabled there? (please send me a screenshot of it if possible)
Thanks!

Thanks for the reply. No, nothing is selected. Screenshot attached. Now I have used Display Fusion for many years, perhaps something is left over from old versions?

Possibly! Could you send me a backup of your settings? (Settings > Options > Export)

If you could also attach a copy of your DisplayFusion troubleshooting info, that would be great:

  • Open the Settings > Troubleshooting tab
  • Click the "Export Info to File" button
  • Reply with the file attached

Thanks!

If you disable the Windows Lock Screen feature in the DisplayFusion settings, then restart DisplayFusion, do these processes stop showing up?

I've disabled the "Allow DisplayFusion to manage..." option, must I also disable the "Use the current Desktop Wallpaper ..." option, which I'd like to keep? It can take days before this problem crops up, so I'll reply if/when it still happens. Y'know, it seems to tend to happen overnight when it happens, I wonder if it is happening when Windows does an overnight update; maybe that trips up with the Lock Screen feature when it reloads...

Disabling "Allow DisplayFusion to manage..." will disable all changing of the lock screen image. The Win8Helper.exe is used for setting the lock screen, it just has an old name still. How has it been since disabling it?

I noticed in your troubleshooting info that there were a lot of duplicates of other processes not related to DisplayFusion as well. Next time it happens, if you scroll down through the Task Manager > Details tab, does it show duplicates for any other processes on the system?

So far it hasn't recurred, but I'll have to monitor for another week to be sure. I'll hadn't noticed other duplicated processes (certainly not in such a high number) but I'll watch for that too. Helpful to know the lock screen is the feature likely involved. Thanks.
