I'm on 7.3.2 pro, and can't seem to get the logon background to change. I've actually never successfully gotten those settings to do anything, even on Win 7, though I'm on 10 now. I haven't been terribly worried about it, but would like to get it working. I found several other threads but saw no resolution on any of them that helped me. DisplayFusion doesn't seem to be adding any images to c:\windows\system32\oobe\info\backgrounds or c:\windows\web either one. I've tried running it as administrator with no luck. I'm in an Active Directory environment with UAC on default setting, and I'm a domain admin so permissions shouldn't be an issue. Also I'm trying to change the logon / sign-in background, not the lock screen background (though if the other is possible, that would be great too). Let me know if there's something else I can try.

Can you check to see if the "DisplayFusionService" Windows service is running? That service does the actual setting of the logon background :)

Sorry - didn't get an email when you replied (despite having "Allow Emails about Discussions Replies: Yes").

Yes, the service has been running.

What's especially odd is this: If I go to Settings > Personalization > Lock screen, the Preview shows the image that I picked in DisplayFusion. When I actually lock my computer though, neither the lock nor logon screen actually reflect that background. This situation persists across reboots.

Ok, I think I've actually come across this bug back in Windows 8, but it seems to be a Windows bug. If you try to set the lock screen image using the Windows settings, does it work?

No, even the Windows setting it doesn't seem to change, even after a reboot. I'll google around and see if I can figure out what's going on. Doesn't seem to be DisplayFusion though. Thanks!

Same here... Fiddling about with latest Version of Windows 10 (10.0.10586.0), DisplayFusion Pro 8.0 (Beta 4).
No matter what I set in DisplayFusion, won't change.

The strange bit is, even when I change the lockscreen-background in Windows' own settings, it doesn't use the one I chose (though it shows it in the preview, same as DisplayFusion does), it uses some random image I chose ages ago...

Yeah, the lock screen in Windows 8 and 10 seems to be unreliable on some machines. Unfortunately I've never had any issues with it here, so I'm not sure what the solution would be, sorry :(

It's okay, just wanted to make sure you know about that "issue". Really strange, it's changing around between images I used in the past, regardless of what I set in either DisplayFusion or Windows 10 itself. It DID work on Windows 10 Build 10246 - who knows what they "tweaked" there again...

Now that one I've actually seen happen, though I ended up re-installing Windows 10 from scratch before I ever decided to try and fix it :)

I joined the Windows Insider preview program and after pushing a preview build of Windows 10 on me, the logon screen is now different in two ways.

First, they fixed the bug above, where the background on that screen would not change. Actually, the lock and the logon screens now both have the background I configured in DisplayFusion, so that's a bonus.

The other way the logon screen is different is that it doesn't actually let me log in. The screen changes to black like it's thinking about loading my profile and dropping me to my desktop, but then the lock screen (press C-A-D) is presented again. Googling around, I found that it seems to be related to custom background images. I tried logging in as a different user, with no background customization, and was able to log in fine.

Is there a way to disable that setting manually? I don't know what all that option in DisplayFusion actually changes or where. I'd be able to open up the registry and go to my other profile's hive and change whatever, or modify files related to that profile. I have a couple years worth of customization and I'd hate to have to blow away that profile on account of this Windows bug.

Ok, could you try the following?
  • Open a Run prompt and type in "gpedit.msc" and click OK.
  • Expand Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Control Panel > Personalization.
  • Enable the "Prevent changing lock screen and logon image" option.
  • Reboot and try to login again.

That didn't fix it. I also found directions that pointed to HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Lock Screen\, and I changed it to match the working user, for the non-working user. There was an image E for the non-working user that I removed, which caused the lock/logon screens to have a solid background again, but I still can't log in. There are references to DisplayFusionHelperWin8.exe under that reg key, so I'm still wondering if there's a way to remove all DisplayFusion changes, to rule it out as contributing. Would uninstalling it revert all registry entries, for all users?

It wouldn't no, it would only remove the entries for the current user. Yesterday 14371 wasn't showing up for me, but I've just checked again and it's downloading now. I will test this out again to see if I can reproduce this issue and I'll keep you posted.

Thanks!

The upgrade for 14371 failed for me on Friday, so I tried again this morning, but ended up on 14372. I'm still not able to reproduce this issue here. If you've already updated to 14372, has it made any difference for your issue?

I'm now on build 14379, but the issue persists.

Can you export that HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Lock Screen\ registry key for both the working and non-working users and send it to me so I can compare it to my test machine here?

I've attached them.

Thanks! Both of those look pretty similar to mine. I'm not sure that the custom lock screen is the issue. I took a test machine, and completely deleted that "Lock Screen" registry key, and it was still able to login without issues.

If you boot into Safe Mode and try to login with that user do you get the same issue there?
