Hey guys,

can DisplayFusion manage my desktop icons yet?

I have this other TV who has 150% UI zoomed it, then I also have a PS4 connected and whenever I turn that on, my windows, etc get messed up. They get thrown into that TV I think. Right now all my desktop icons are gone. Usually, with windows, I just press the shortcut keys to move them back to my own screen.

Is there a way to move my icons back?
Can DF help me with this problem in general, when my windows get messed up ... something automatically?

Thanks

Sorry, to clarify, are you having trouble with the desktop icons, open windows, or both?

Kind of both, however the windows I can "fix" by using the keyboard shortcut of moving a window trough the monitors.

So to be clear again.

I have 2 monitors and 1 TV. I only use the TV occasionally. Because I turned on my PlayStation which connects to my 1st Monitor, this somehow messes with my monitor settings or something and it moves everything to the TV. My TV is off so I can't really see the windows & desktop icons.

Somehow the Icons always came back to the 1st monitor, but these time they did not.

I'm kind of looking for a general fix for this problem. I hate it that Windows decides to move everything to the TV. Is there anything that DisplayFusion can do to help with this?

Ah ok, yep! For the desktop icons:

  • Setup your icons the way you want them
  • Right-click the DisplayFusion tray icon, navigate to Desktop Icons > Save Profile > New Profile and save the layout
  • Open the DisplayFusion Monitor Configuration
  • Click the Save button and save your monitor layout as a new Monitor Profile
  • Click the Manage Monitor Profiles button, and in that window, assign your Desktop Icon Profile to the Monitor Profile
  • Now when your TV switches back, the Monitor Profile should get detected and the Desktop Icon Profile will be automatically loaded

For the application windows, try this guide: Automatically Save and Restore Window Positions on Dock/Undock

Wow,

that should save me .... when Microsoft decide to rearrange my 45 icons.
(very often, alas)

I use them positionally!

Hey Keith,

now to my 2nd problem that keeps repeating.

To reasons that are not related to DisplayFusion my 1st monitor sometimes gets disabled. I have a HDMI switch that sometimes decides to switch to the PS4... etc etc.

When that happens Windows decides to make my main monitor my TV, which is mostly turned off and has the UI at 150%.
When I turn my Monitor back on, all my windows are on my TV, which again, it's turned off. It is annoying to move all of them back.

Not only that, but if I open a new window, that new window decides to open on the TV and not on the 1st Monitor. I have to use the keyboard shortcuts to move the window to the 1st monitor. But then again, a new window opens to the TV.

Is there anything that DF can do to help with this? Right now I just disabled the TV, but even that it's annoying because when I want to use it I have to ... enable it, make sure that windows is not moving anything o it yet, etc.

@Bogdan: There are a couple of things I would do there:
  • Set a key combination on the "Move all windows to current monitor" function, so that when the windows are stuck on the TV, you can just press the key combo to move them all back to the main monitor.
  • Create a Trigger rule to move all new windows to the current monitor, so that any new windows that open will move to the monitor that the mouse cursor is on. I've attached a screenshot of that for reference.
