Windows 19 Enterprise 2009 (10.0.21370)

The system tray icons are missing on the primary monitor. I can temporarily get them back by resetting the toolbar, but the disappear soon after.

Hi Brian,

Is this happening on the Windows taskbar or a DisplayFusion taskbar?

Thanks!

Not sure hot to answer.

I have Enable Multi-Monitor Taskbars turned on. This is happening on the Primary Monitor only. The taskbar on the other 2 monitors are working fine.

By default, your Windows taskbar will be on your primary monitor. Could you send me over a video of the issue happening?

Thanks!

This seems to have resolved itself. That said, it did happen a few times after I updated to v9.8 but seems to have stopped after the latest Windows update to Build 21376.

Well, it has returned and follows the primary monitor. Before icons disappear, the icons in the try area are jumbled.

Thanks!

I have the same issue. It started when I updated Win 10 Pro to 21H1.
It seems I can make the problem go away by closing DF, waiting a few seconds then running it again. The problem recurs on a PC restart.
Let me know if there is any additional information I can provide
~GP
EDIT: I was wrong about re-starting DF - after a few minutes the problem reappeared - but it does go away if I exit DF.

Upon further research, appears to be a Windows issue. I uninstalled DF and it was still happening. I usually use 125% scaling, and it happens, but changing to 100% appears to fix it. Thanks Microsoft

The problem definitely goes away for me by not running DF. Ran all day without it running, including a few restarts "just to see". I used Windows to add a taskbar to each screen (minus the system tray of course).

I just ran DF and within one minute the system tray icons started to disappear and reappear. Sometimes half of them would be there, with scrolling arrows to move across them. Mostly not visible at all. Disabled DF and normal service was resumed.

While I have the issue, the system tray area is perfectly normal on the DF taskbars - it's just screwed up on the main Windows monitor.

I have four 4K monitors and have magnification set to 150%.

Hi, I have this issue as well on the latest 21h1 Windows Feature Release. It only happens if I turn off the new 'News and Interests' icon from the windows task bar options. If I enable it, either full display or icon only, system tray icons behave normally but requires reboot for tray icons to come back.

Hello,

As brought out in this article: https://www.techradar.com/news/windows-10-update-is-messing-with-the-taskbar-but-theres-an-easy-fix, this does seem to be an issue from the latest Windows update. As Brian mentioned as well, it looks like this is fixed up in the latest insider build too.

In the meantime, we'll take a look into the issue to see if there's anything we can do until that insider build is released.

Thanks!

I'm so happy to see this discussion, I'm experiencing the same issue since the update with 200% window scaling. Glad to hear the DisplayFusion team was able to reproduce it.

I've found, as others have mentioned, that enabling the new weather and news taskbar feature fixes the issue for the time being.

Thanks all! Look forward to the DisplayFusion update in time.

FWIW, as previously posted, the issue started for me with 21H1 and the cumulative update KB5003637) didn't fix the problem - the News and Interests icon fix still works.

The recent Windows Update "21H1" (introducing "News and Interests" in the taskbar) causes a sizing issue for the tray area. It also causes some kind of drawing issue, see the attached screenshot. (The orange icon in the screenshot is actually a pinned app, usually next to the Windows start button.)

I'm on 4k with 200% scaling. Hiding "News and Interests" will cause the tray to shift out of screen. Once a redraw is triggered, the tray will overflow and overlap with pinned apps, see screenshot.

Not hiding "News and Interests" seems to be a consistent workaround.

I'm on Build 19043.1052 and tried with DF 9.7 and most recent 9.8.

Maybe abundant to mention but I also have this problem since 20H2. Disabling and re-enabling News and interests shows the system tray icons again (but usually not for long :P ).

Don't bother trying to disable News and interests through the registry (Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Feeds\ShellFeedsTaskbarViewMode, it provides the same values as disabling it manually from the taskbar yourself and won't make a difference.

I can also confirm that this issue happens with 20H2. The "News and Interests" update was apparently not specific to 21H1. Exiting and restarting DF temporarily fixes things.

Related: Resizing the task bar (dragging the top border up/down) also causes the Search (magnifying glass) icon to change to the start menu icon, making it appear as though there are two start menu icons. As soon as you hover over the 2nd icon, it reverts. Resizing the taskbar will also often corrupt the system tray icons, again temporarily.

While I find "News and Interests" to be intrusive and annoying, I guess I'll have to re-enable it until BF (or MS) gets this figured out.

This problem is usually caused by turning off the News and Interests app, enabling it will fix the issue until Microsoft fixes the bug. You can set the News app to just show the icon if you wish.

Hey Owen,

FYI: If you set a machine's scaling to 150%, and then use the 'modern' Windows RDP client app (which supports scaling) to connect to it, you can trigger the bug on-the-fly by simply resizing the RDP window.

Hope that helps.

NP. So far 10 beta 1 appears to fix this issue in my case! Nice!

To clarify my previous scenario:

- News and Interests bar disabled.
- Set your desktop res to >100% (I said 150%, but I'm actually experiencing it at 125%).
- Connect to remote computer (that has DF installed on it) via Windows Store RDP app.
- Resize RDP window to trigger bug.

Hello,

We've just released a new beta that includes an advanced setting called "Disable Hooking the Windows Taskbar". We tried to have this setting enable itself based on auto detection from various system settings, but that didn't seem to go over well, so we've removed the auto detection and added it as an advanced setting. Can you try updating, enabling that setting, and restarting DisplayFusion to see if the issue persists?

Please note there may be some side effects, due to DisplayFusion having limited control over the Windows taskbar. We would not recommend using monitor splits on your primary monitor while that setting is enabled.

As always, if you run into any more issues after updating, please let us know.

Thanks!

For my PC V10.0 Beta 2 seems to fix the disappearing system tray icons if "Hooking" is disabled.
But:
- The start menu taskbar button (left had side of taskbar) only works on the real Windows taskbar)
- HWInfo64 monitors enabled on the taskbar also only work on the windows taskbar.
Setting "Hooking" back to default returns everything to the status quo ante.
I'm going to use the "News and Interests" workaround - icon only. It's not too annoying

Hi,

I have the same issue with taskbar icons near the clock area in the bottom right corner. I installed the latest beta and that option with taskbar hooking disabled works for messed icons but start menu buttons on the DF taskbars on my not main monitors are not working when the option is turned on. In general my observations are similar as Gary described earlier.

Hello,

@NirVas, Unfortunately that is one of the side effects to having that setting enabled. Without control over the Windows taskbar, we can't hook the start menu to bring it to a DisplayFusion taskbar when prompted.

There was a cumulative windows update (KB5003690) that seemed to fix the tray issue up though, without having to use our work around. Please let me know if you have any issues after updating.

I've also got strange behaviour to the system tray since the windows update, there is no pattern to what's going on from what I can tell. If I restart Displayfusion it will have the same issues 30seconds later.

The issues I'm getting:
- System tray disappears on my main monitor.
- System tray will partially reappear and start to flash on the main monitor but there will be overlapping icons etc. The icons are limited to the programs open in the background.
- The system tray on the second monitor is fine.

I've had Displayfusion for years and years, but this is the first time I've had to disable it, as I just can't get work done.

Here is my update from my original post

1. Running Windows 21390 w/KB4601049, KB5004092 and KB5004123 (basically the latest in the Beta Ring)
2. DisplayFusion 10.0 (Beta 2)
3. Hooking the Taskbar is at its default value

Observations
  • The messed up/sometimes missing icons issues seems to be fixed for me without running Windows News and Interests.
  • The Start menu on non main monitors works intermittently. IF I click it enough times, it will appear on the main monitor, then the next time I click it will open on the correct monitor

Maybe I'm speaking too soon, but the latest Windows updates seem to have fixed my problem:

- DF 10.0(Beta2) with "Disable Hooking the Windows Taskbar" not enabled
- Windows 10 Build 19042.1081, fully updated as of June 26
- News and Interests turned off in taskbar

All taskbars (Windows and DF) working normally. Windows taskbar system tray icons correct and stable since the last round of Windows updates.

I'll post back if any problems recur

This is for sure not an isolated problem, I too am having this issue. The taskbar system icons (just the area where the clock is) only on the main monitor just vanish. I can only get them back if I start up Display Fusion and they come back but it does not last. There is another side effect I am having that has my desktop icons that are appearing overlaid on top and if I hover my mouse over the clock area they go away but then return. I have attached an image showing what it looks like when the task bar system icons are there and all messed up with the images.

NOTE: As per your last question for another person I do not have KB5003690 installed.
