I'm running into issues with PhotoShop CS4 and CS3, which I can guarantee will freeze up DF solid. This is something different than the buttons freezing and not refreshing. About 95% of the time if I right click the DF taskbar while CS3/CS4 is loading (or after it loads), DF will lockup solid. If it doesn't lock up initially, it probably will on CS3/4 shutdown (if you're right clicking the DF taskbar). Sometimes when CS3/4 is running DF will be froze if I do nothing, but go to it to click a button.

On a somewhat related note, the other day when I had PhotoShop CS4 open and DF swapped wallpapers, my desktop icons (with CS4 up, but not maximized, so I could see) started flashing like crazy. I minimized CS4 and the flashing stopped..

Anyway, investigating further. I have CS4 at home and will test more tonight.

Additional note: I just got DF to freeze up solid by continually right clicking the taskbar (without CS3/4 open). Not a behaviour you typically do, but I was testing and it froze without CS3/4 being open. (though DF still locks up as described above)

DF lockup confirmed on home machine as well. Launching PhotoShop CS4 and then right clicking on the DF task bar a few times locks DF up solid. Happens on CS4 launch, and also on CS4 shutdown.

PhotoShop isn't using a particulary large amount of memory or CPU during startup and shutdown. If DF is keeping track of programs that load on the primary monitor, maybe it's having a hard time parsing PhotoShop button info?

Anyway, this isn't something many will run across. (I'm kind of tough on programs... :| )

This might be good news all around. I've UNinstalled McAfee's and I can't get DF to freeze up with PhotoShop CS3/4 any more. I'll keep plugging away, but things are looking better. Might this even be the problem with the freezing DF taskbar buttons?

Very interesting. Exactly what version of McAfee are you running?

It's the latest Enterprise version (we get this version through our work). Sadly, with it uninstalled, I was just able to get DF to lock up twice while starting PhotoShop CS4....

Funny, though, with NO programs in the DF taskbar (no buttons) I couldn't get it to lock up...

I'm not sure how much of a problem this would be to the average joe, though. There's a period of time during CS4's start up and shut down (a couple of seconds) where it slows all window's actions an it's during this time while right clicking DF that it locks up. Doubtful anyone would be doing this at that exact time...

I'll leave McAfee UNinstalled and continue testing the button freeze issue.

I've almost got that test build ready for you. I should be able to post it tonight. It won't be Beta 18, it will just be a replacement "displayfusion.exe" file time-stamped today. It has completely re-written threading code, with more threading, smarter locking and better logging. I'm very excited to see if this build will address the issue, or at least point a finger in the right direction. :)

Here we go! Completely re-vamped threading, and more logging. Just replace DisplayFusion.exe with the copy attached to this post and you're all set. It should be version 2.2.117 still, but the .exe will have a timestamp of "Feb 6, 2009 @ 12:14am". I'm very interested to see if this will work any better. :)

Thanks!

Got several of these errors on startup (see attached), but it eventually started. I'll report back with any abnormalities... 8-)

Sorry, I left the application compiled in debug mode which means it shows language errors at startup. :( You can safely ignore those errors though.

I'm sorry for the confusion, but that .exe file I posted last night was NOT the latest version and was horribly buggy. :( This version is the correct testing version, and it is marked as version "2.2.117" with a timestamp of "Feb 6, 2009 @ 4:36pm". It is now digitally signed correctly, and has the correct threading fixes in place. Thanks for testing!

Update: Get the new beta instead from here:

DF just notified me that there's an update (2.2.118). Should I get it over the special build (2.2.117...)?

You're fast! I just uploaded that, and I haven't even posted on the forums yet. Yes, Beta 18 contains all the fixes in that special build plus some additional things. :) Thanks!

Good idea. :) Beta 18 has some excellent improvements to deal with the locking issue.

I was just wondering if you have had any lockups with Beta 18/19? I'm hoping that no news is good news. :)

Well, I've had absolutely no lockups while running adobe CS4 products since beta 18/19. I tried to lock up DF while CS4 is loading/unloading as well (which, before, I could do every time), but she seems to be working just fine. :-)

In an effort to jinx this, I'm going to mark this topic as "complete". :) Please post again if you have any issues, but I've got my fingers crossed that everything is ready for final release.

Me personally, no, none whatsoever - or, better, I should say none that I can trace back to DF - I have had Windows Explorer lock up at odd times, but in W7 it recovers itself within seconds, so I never really notice anything missing....
I am I.
