Hi,

I have been using both DisplayFusion and Wallpaper Engine for years now. I formatted my computer a few days and installed Windows 11 for the first time. Before, I was using Windows 10. DisplayFusion and Wallpaper Engine were running at the same time with no issues. I currently use 3 monitors.

However, since I installed Windows 11, I now get this weird screen flicker once every like 30 seconds to a minute. This happens on all screens that are showing my desktop. It seems to be the wallpaper itself glitching out because if I have, for example, chrome open on all monitors, this won't happen or at least isn't visible.

If I close DisplayFusion and let Wallpaper Engine run, it stops happening. However, if I close Wallpaper Engine and leave DisplayFusion running, it also stops. Everytime both are running, I cannot get this to stop. I've messed around the settings with both programs and I cannot get it to stop. I have to close one of the programs when using my PC as the flicker is very annoying and I cannot focus getting screen flashes every few seconds.

It seems that both programs are interacting somehow and causing a wallpaper glitch. DisplayFusion isn't set to control my wallpaper or screen saver. Any suggestions on why this might be happening? It was working fine on Windows 10, I've using both programs for years now.

Thanks.

I will also add that at first, I was using v11. I then updated to the latest beta version in hopes that it would be fixed, but I'm still having this issue on b4.

Regards.

After some more tweaking I realized that this stops happening if I turn off Multi-Monitor Taskbars in DisplayFusion, which concludes this is related to this function.

However, this is not a good solution as this is the main reason I use DF, to have a taskbar on each monitor with shortcuts and tray icons. Perhaps there is something in the advanced settings I can change to fix this or a simple hotfix can be released, as this wasn't happening in W10 with taskbars enabled?

Could you send me over a debug log? Here are the steps:

  • On the DisplayFusion Settings > Troubleshooting tab, change the Logging drop-down to "L1: Log Minimal" and click Apply
  • Reproduce the issue and note the time so we'll know where to check in the log file
  • Click the "Export Info to File" button on the Settings > Troubleshooting tab
  • Reply with the file attached
  • Disable debug logging after sending the log

Thank you for the answer. I have attached the logs. By noting down when the issue occured, I realized it happens once every 60 seconds exactly.

Right before exporting the logs, I saw it happen at: 15:06:23, 15:07:23, 15:08:23, 15:09:23 (24 hour clock)

Please let me know what you think.

Thanks for sending that over. If you disable tray icons on your DisplayFusion taskbars, does that fix it up?

Hi. It seems that it does. Wallpaper no longer flickers when tray icons are disabled on DisplayFusion taskbars.

However, this defeats the purpose of using DisplayFusion taskbars for me as this is one of the main features I use it for as it is very convient to have tray icons on all monitors. Is there anything else that can be done?

Okay interesting, we have a similar issue on our list to look into. We'll let you know if we have any news on this going forward.

Thanks!

Alright. Please provide an update if you find a workaround in the meantime as it's not worth using DisplayFusion taskbars without tray icons in Windows 11 since you can use the Windows ones.

I can confirm that this issue is still happening after like 100 betas. Please fix this.

This will require an overhaul of our core code. We tried a few other ideas but ran into some road blocks. We'll be sure to post here if we have any updates.

Thanks!

I'm sort of curious as I've never seen this happen. What kind of wallpaper are you using? Scene, video, web? Wallpaper Engine has lots of options to consider playing with as well. It does sound like it is Wallpaper Engine's rendering that is the issue, even if DisplayFusion is somehow triggering it.

Happens with any wallpaper engine wallpaper. I've spent hours changing settings on both displayfusion and wallpaper engine. Nothing works. I just accepted defeat and decided to wait for a fix and disable dp taskbars. It's frustrating because this only started happening when I upgraded to Windows 11. On 10 it wasn't a problem. It's been almost a year and I've learned to live without the displayfusion taskbars, but it was very useful and one of the reasons I bought the program in the first place.

They seem to know why this is happening based on Owen's previous comments, so if there was an option I could change that would fix it I believe he would have told me by now. I am also curious on why this is happening since windows 10 and 11 are not that much different but only they can go into detail about that.

I mean, I say this because I've been on Windows 11, had DisplayFusion and had Wallpaper Engine since Dec 2021. I've never seen what you're talking about.

All Owen said is that they have a similar issue that they can reproduce. They have not said they have reproduced this issue with Wallpaper Engine. Considering that I do not have your issue, even if they fixed the issue they know about, that does not mean it will fix your issue. It also means that your issue is not necessarily wide-spread. You might have another thing that is playing a hand in these interactions and causing an issue you can observe. I may not have that 3rd piece of the puzzle, so I've never seen it.

The update from Windows 10 -> Windows 11 broke the way we grabbed the tray icons in the past. We now need to poll and update them one by one, which is done every minute. The log you sent over had the issue happening right after that poll fired, so it's likely causing this issue (and you mentioned disabling the icons fixed it up too).

We aren't able to revert to the reliable code that worked in Win10, due to the changes in Windows 11. We'll need to find another work around here, but as I mentioned this is quite a big change. Disabling just the tray icons on your taskbars should fix this up if you would like to use the other features from DisplayFusion taskbars.

Hope that clears things up!
