Hi!

I'm on Windows 10 21H2, and DisplayFusion 9.9 Steam edition.
I am using a Dell 49" ultrawide U4919DW 5120x1440 monitor, with 4 vertical zones (splits).

Most of the times when I trigger my Windows Position Profile, or when it is triggered by a rule, the windows that I have ticked to Maximize do so across the entire screen, ignoring my splits. If I click the Maximize button in the title bar of one of these windows, it fills the virtual monitor nicely as it should.

Please advise.

Hello,

If you double click an entry in your profile, is "Ignore monitor splits when maximizing" checked?

Thanks!

Hi Owen, thanks for getting back to me.
No, none of the maximized windows have this option checked.
Also, do note that it sometimes works (one or more of the windows conform to the splits), it's just kind of rare. Mostly they go wide.

Interesting, does this happen with every window, or a specific application window?

Thanks!

It happens mainly with Firefox and Thunderbird, but occasionally also with Deezer. The 4th window I have set to maximize in this Windows Position profile is Netflix, which isn't often open.
None of the windows I have NOT ticked as "Maximize" ever blows up to fill the entire monitor.

Could you send me over a debug log? Here are the steps:

  • On the DisplayFusion Settings > Troubleshooting tab, change the Logging drop-down to "L1: Log Minimal" and click Apply
  • Reproduce the issue and note the time so we'll know where to check in the log file
  • Click the "Export Info to File" button on the Settings > Troubleshooting tab
  • Reply with the file attached
  • Disable debug logging after sending the log

Thanks!

Hi Owen, here you go. Log is kept very tight to just the test attempt, not much "fat" on it. Rough time of test (seconds is a guess) = 19:07:20.
Test was done by hitting my keyboard shortcut for applying my Windows Position profile. Before I hit the shortcut, Thunderbird was already correctly placed and maximized to its virtual monitor, whereas Firefox had been sized to half the screen width (= covering the two rightmost virtual monitors). Both Firefox and Thunderbird did the "ignore splits" thing.
Please let me know if you need me to test another way. Thanks!

Thanks for sending that over, it looks like DisplayFusion thinks it's setting those windows to the correct bounds. Do the windows snap to the size of the split, and then move to the full bounds of your monitor, or does it go directly to the full bounds?

Thanks!

It looks like it briefly snaps to the virtual monitor (the split zone), and then goes wide.

Could you send me over a backup of your settings? You can grab them in the DisplayFusion Settings > Options > Export Settings.

Thanks!

Thanks for sending that over, it still seems to be working fine for me. I've been testing this out on our latest beta, can you try updating and see if the issue persists there? Here's the link: https://www.displayfusion.com/Download/Beta/

You can install that beta directly overtop of your current install.

Thanks!

Hey Owen, thanks for the suggestion.
I followed your advice, but the issue still occurs, sorry to say.
Are you using a monitor that's 5120 pixels wide?

Yep, I've been testing with the monitor/split configuration from your troubleshooting file. Out of curiousity, does this happen at all with Notepad windows?

Thanks!

Hi Owen, I don't have Notepad in my Windows Position profile, but since you asked, I tried adding it just to see.
It went wide the first time I hit my shortcut to trigger the profile, but I haven't been able to reproduce it some 30+ attempts since.
I will say that the results are never consistent. If I simply keep hitting the shortcut, the 5120px-wide-windows will sometimes go back to proper position and size again.
I perhaps should also mention that my Windows toolbar is docked against the left side of the screen (not the bottom) - did you have yours there while testing? Perhaps it has an effect?

Ah yep, looks like that did it. I was able to reproduce this on my end so I've added it to our list to look into. We'll be sure to let you know if we're able to get this fixed up in the future.

Thanks!

Appreciate the follow-up, Owen.
Thing is, with a screen this wide, having the toolbar at the bottom seems an awful waste of real estate - so I'm not keen to move it back.
Hope you'll fix it soon.
